Recounting the tragic events of the Matthew Shepard murder in 1998, The Laramie Project tells a story of the issues of hate crimes, sexuality and the death penalty in rural America, and of moving forward with a permanent, deeply rooted hope for a better future.
Written by Moisés Kaufman and members of The Tectonic Theater Company and first performed in the year 2000. Still reeling from the shock of the Matthew Sheppard murder in 1998, 8 members of The Tectonic Theater Company travelled to Laramie, Wyoming and conducted over 200 hours of interviews with the residents. From these interviews they crafted ‘The Laramie Project’ a poignant play detailing over 60 residents of Laramie and their views on the crime, Laramie and the death penalty.
Blackout Theatre Company, formerly known as Blacktown Theatre Company, has been providing entertainment and opportunities for individuals to perform in Western Sydney for over 15 years and now we’re branching out into Sydney. Performing shows in Blacktown, Penrith, Parramatta and Newtown, Blackout Theatre Company is excited to be producing The Laramie Project at The Depot Theatre this year.
